     He was a WWI veteran.¹ The story was that Mariel left George and the children (Margaret, Frances, Betty and Ivan Horton) to start a new life. George had no means to care for the kids so he put them in the Children's aid Society in Detroit.¹

     Mariel C Groh was born on 28 October 1902 at Mason, Ingham Co., MI.¹ She was the daughter of Orren Groh and Maggie Piffer.¹ Mariel C Groh married George Henry Horton, son of George Henry Horton and Maggie Eaton, on 22 October 1919 at Mason, Ingham Co., MI.¹ Mariel C Groh married Leo R Finnerty, son of Michael J Finnerty and Theresa Fleishman, on 22 February 1936 at Detroit, Wayne Co., MI.¹ Mariel C Groh died on 18 October 1978 at St. Vincent Hospital, Green Bay, Brown Co., WI, at age 75.¹ She was buried on 21 October 1978 at Holy Cross Cemetery, Escanaba, Delta Co., MI.¹
     The story was that Mariel left George and the children (Margaret, Frances, Betty and Ivan Horton) to start a new life.      Freeman Lavern Wiltse was born on 26 June 1915 at Homer, Midland Co., MI.¹ He was the son of Clark A Wiltse and Bessie Beatrice Crawford.¹ Freeman Lavern Wiltse died on 12 April 1984 at Detroit, Wayne Co., MI, at age 68.¹ He was buried on 14 April 1984 at Parkview Memorial Cemetery, Livonia, Wayne Co., MI.¹
     He entered active duty into the Army 24 March 1943 and was an automotive mechanic. He was responsible for maintenance and repair on all types of military heavy equipment. He overhauled engines, replaced units and all heavy maintenance. While at Fort Dix in New Jersey he was inspector of vehicles that were to be sent overseas, making initial and final inspections. He completed his service 21 February 1946.¹

     Bessie Beatrice Crawford was born on 31 July 1898 at Midland, Midland Co., MI.¹ She was baptized on 31 May 1908 at St. John's Church, Midland, Midland Co., MI.¹ She married Clark A Wiltse, son of Marchiel Alva Wiltse and Nancy Fineout, on 16 February 1914 at Midland County Courthouse, Midland, Midland Co., MI.¹ Bessie Beatrice Crawford died on 24 February 1980 at War Memorial Hospital, Sault Ste. Marie, Chippewa Co., MI, at age 81.¹ She was buried on 26 February 1980 at Evergreen Cemetery, Detroit, Wayne Co., MI.¹
     As of 16 February 1914,her married name was Wiltse.
