     From the 15 Feb 1825 trial of Charles Ball for the murder of his father, Daniel Ball: The trial of Charles Ball on an indictment for the murder of his father on 23 June 1824 at Bridport came on at the Supreme Court for Addison County and lasted two days. The testimony adduced in defence of the prisoner was chiefly with a view to establish his insanity and probably so far influenced the Jury. After being out about three hours, they returned with a verdict of "not guilty of murder, but guilty of manslaughter."
     On the Saturday following the prisoner was brought into court and being asked if he had anything to offer that the court should not proceed to pronounce sentence of the law, he said he had -- that he was innocent of the charge brought against him. The Hon. Chief Judge Skinner then proceeded to pronounce sentence: that Charles Ball, the prisoner at the bar be forthwith taken from the place of his confinement here and carried to the State Prison at Windsor in the County of Windsor and that he be therein confined to hard labor during his life.⁴
