NY, saloon keeper, with wife Catherine and son Edward.³ From "The Owyhee Avalanche" Silver City, ID, newspaper: "Eph Ball, one of the popular proprietors of the saloon in the Overland Hotel in Bosie City came over on last night's stage to pay Silver a short visit."⁴ From page 3 of the 13 May 1876 edition of the "Idaho Weekly Avalanche": "A brother of Eph. Ball is the Mayor of Salinas City, Monterey County, California." The brother was Henry Seymour Ball.⁴ He appeared on the census of 5 June 1880 at Deadwood, Lawrence Co., Dakota Territory; "E.      Erastus Ball was born circa 1767 at Salisbury, Litchfield Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Daniel Ball and Hannah (????).¹ Erastus Ball was baptized on 14 June 1784 at St. James Episcopal Church, Great Barrington, Berkshire Co., MA.² He married Sarah Seeley on 23 August 1787 at West Stockbridge, Berkshire Co., MA.³ Erastus Ball died circa October 1803 at Westford, Chittenden Co., VT; Comment by DGB: Administration of the estate of Erastus Ball, late of Westford VT, was granted 24 January 1804 to Peter Neels and the widow Sarah was visited 1 November 1803 following the death. This leaves the parentage of John T. Ball that was born April 1805 in question. End of comment.
     Erastus Ball appeared on the census of August 1790 at Salisbury, Litchfield Co., CT; "Erastus" with 2 males over 16 (Erastus 23) and 2 females (wife Sarah and daughter Polly 2). The other male could either be a boarder or some other relative, such as an unknown brother, born 1773 or earlier.⁴ He appeared on the census of August 1800 at Westford, Chittenden Co., VT; "Erastus" with male 26-44 (Erastus 33), female 26-44 (wife Sarah), male 10-15 (unknown), 2 males under 10 (Erastus 9 and Milton 7), female 10-15 (Polly 12) and female under 10 (Anne 10). Since there were no males under 16 listed with Erastus in 1790, one can assume that the male 10-15 with him in 1800 is not a child of his, but a farm laborer. The rest of the family matches the known family for Erastus, assuming that son Ira was not born before 4 August 1800.⁵

CT, factory laborer, with wife Polly and children Andrew, Erastus and Horace, and Mary J. Ball (age 15, b. CT, domestic; listed after the other children which might imply that this was not his age 21 daughter; most likely would be the daughter of his brother Philo, who is also listed with Philo as age 15 and a domestic).⁴ He appeared on the census of 9 July 1870 at Salisbury, Litchfield Co., CT; "Erastus", age 66, b. CT, farm laborer, with wife Polly, sons Erastus and Horace, and daughter-in-law Elizabeth and her family.⁵ He appeared on the census of 9 June 1880 at Salisbury, Litchfield Co., CT; "Erastus" age 75, b. CT, retired iron digger, with wife Polly and sons Horace and Erastus and family.⁶
