Daniel Ball was born circa 1756 at Shrewsbury, Worcester Co., MA; Comment by DGB: the name on the damaged page is missing, but the year date coincides with the baptism date. End of comment.1 He was the son of Daniel Ball and Lucy Newton. Daniel Ball was baptized on 8 June 1756 at Church in the North Parish, Shrewsbury, Worcester Co., MA; with brothers Moses and Aaron.2 He married Lydia Smith on 18 September 1778 at Shrewsbury, Worcester Co., MA.3 Daniel Ball died on 23 February 1830 at Troy, Cheshire Co., NH.4

Daniel Ball
M, #10636, b. circa 1744, d. 20 December 1825
Daniel Ball was born circa 1744. He married Hannah (????).1 Daniel Ball died on 20 December 1825 at Salisbury, Litchfield Co., CT. He was buried at Mount Riga Cemetery, Litchfield Co., CT.2
Comment by DGB: There is a theory that Daniel was the son of a James Ball, who was born say 1716 or so in England and died in Salisbury CT. That James Ball is proposed to have had three sons, Daniel, Moses and Joseph. Nothing is known about either Moses or Joseph at this time. Apparently this theory goes back to at least an 1897 manuscript by one Burton O. Holden ("Family Record of the Ball Family"). However, DNA testing of a descendant of this branch presents strong evidence that Daniel was descended from John Ball and Elizabeth Pierce of Watertown MA. End of comment.
Extracted from the "Records of the Ministerial offices of the Rev. Gideon Bostwick A.M.": "Tockonoch Mountain baptized Betsa, Erastus, Elijah, Danll & Silvester, sons and dr. of Danll Ball & Hannah his wife." Comment by DGB: Note that this was four months before the birth date of the son Sylvester that married Sally Muffin and excludes both sons John and Peter that were still living. End of comment.3 He appeared on the census of August 1790 at Salisbury, Litchfield Co., CT; "Daniel" with 4 males over 15 (Daniel 46, Elijah 19, John 16 and Peter 16), 2 males under 16 Daniel 10 and Sylvester 5), and 4 females (wife Hannah 42, Elijah's wife Esther 19 and Elijah's daughters Esther 1 and Mary 0). This would match the combined known families of Daniel and his son Elijah, assuming that daughter Betsey (married to George Holmes) was likely living with her new husband and son Erastus was enumerated with his family.4 He appeared on the census of August 1800 at Salisbury, Litchfield Co., CT; "Danl." with a male over 44 (Daniel 56), a female of 44 (wife Hannah 62), 2 males 16-25 (probably Peter or John 26 and Daniel 20), and a female 10-15 (unknown). This does not account for Sylvester 15, but he may have been living with Elijah.5 He appeared on the census of August 1810 at Salisbury, Litchfield Co., CT; "Danl." with a male over 44 (Daniel 66) and a female over 44 (wife Hannah 62).6

Daniel Ball was born on 25 July 1780 at Salisbury, Litchfield Co., CT.2 He was the son of Daniel Ball and Hannah (????).1 Daniel Ball was baptized on 14 June 1784 at Great Barrington, Berkshire Co., MA.3 He married Lydia Merritt, daughter of Cornbury Merritt and Mary (????), say 1807. Daniel Ball died before 1840; his widow is head of household for the census.4
Daniel Ball appeared on the census of August 1810 at Salisbury, Litchfield Co., CT; "Danl. Jnr." with a male 25-44 (Daniel 30), a female 16-25 (wife Lydia 21), a male under 10 (Horace 0), and a female under 10 (Aurelia 1).5 He appeared on the census of August 1820 at Alford, Berkshire Co., MA; "Daniel" with a male 26-44 (Daniel 40), a female over 44 (probably an error for wife Lydia 31), a male over 44 (unknown), a male 10-14 (Horace 10), a male under 10 (John 6), a female 10-15 (Aurelia 11), and 3 females under 10 (Ann Jeanette 5, daughter 3, and Mary Ann 2).6 He appeared on the census of June 1830 at Lee, Berkshire Co., MA; "Dan'l" with a male 40-49 (Daniel 49), a female 40-49 (wife Lydia 41), a male 30-39 (unknown), 2 males 15-19 (Horace 19 and John 17), a male 10-14 (unknown), a male 5-10 (Franklin 6), a male under 5 (Charles 0), a female 80-89 (possibly Daniel's mother Hannah 82 or Lydia's mother Mary 80), a female 15-19 (Ann Jeanette 15), 2 females 10-14 (Mary 12 and probably Harriet 8), and a female under 5 (Laurietta 5). Comment by DGB: The primary rationale for assuming that this is the correct family is that son Charles was born in Lee MA in Jan 1830, so having Daniel and his family still living there later that year is reasonable. As well, all of Daniel's known family are accounted for and the distribution closely matches the 1820 census allowing for the fact that the 1830 census was taken in June, rather than August. End of comment.7
