     Comment by DGB: There was a James Ball (age 39) with wife Sarah A. (age 32) living at St. Louis MO for the 1870 that might be this couple. If so, that might imply that son William T. Ball (age about 5 in 1870) was not with them at that time and may have been adopted some time thereafter. End of comment.³

     Comment by DGB: It would be unusual for there to be a 15 year break following the birth of a sixth child to birth a seventh child at the age of 50. It is possible that Edith was a grandchild whose circumstances benefitted from being raised as a daughter by her grandparents. End of comment.
