Daniel Ball1

M, #31527, b. 4 May 1798, d. 23 August 1856
Daniel Ball was born on 4 May 1798 at Springfield, Windsor Co., VT.2,3 He was the son of Daniel Ball and Ruth Stimpson.1 Daniel Ball married Eliza Torrance, daughter of Jeduthan Torrance and Eunice (????), on 7 February 1819 at Enfield, Hampshire Co., MA; "John Montgomery."4 Daniel Ball and Eliza Torrance posted marriage intentions on 5 March 1819 at Springfield, Hampden Co., MA; "Mr. John Montgomery of Springfield."5 Daniel Ball died on 23 August 1856 at Pelham, Hampshire Co., MA, at age 58.6,7
Comment by DGB: Sometime before his marriage to Eliza Torrence, Daniel Ball apparently changed his name to John B. Montgomery. End of comment. From an article in the "Hampshire Gazette" 2 January 1855: "Court of Common Pleas…Commonwealth vs. John B. Montgomery for burning the saw mill of Marlin Torrance, in Enfield. This case was tried in June last [1854], and the jury did not agree. The principal witness then for the prosecution was Wm. P. Montgomery, a son of the defendant who was indicted with his father for the same offense. The son then testified very strongly against his father, but at the present trial he had forgotten nearly all he testified to before. Hence a very strong case was not made out against the defendant. Verdict, not guilty."4
