Josiah Ball

M, #101, b. 21 March 1712/13, d. 28 October 1791
Josiah Ball was born on 21 March 1712/13 at Watertown, Middlesex Co., MA; twin of Isaac.1 He was the son of Joseph Ball and Elizabeth Parkhurst.2 Josiah Ball married Rachel Corbett, daughter of John Corbett and Mehetabel Holbrook, on 3 July 1733 at Mendon, Worcester Co., MA.3 Josiah Ball married Sarah (????) on 23 October 1758 at Milford, Worcester Co., MA; "Widow Sarah White."4 Josiah Ball married Sarah (????) on 5 December 1759 at Upton, Worcester Co., MA; "Mrs. Sarah Palmer."5 Josiah Ball and Sarah (????) posted marriage intentions on 12 October 1759 at Mendon, Worcester Co., MA.3 Josiah Ball died on 28 October 1791 at Milford, Worcester Co., MA, at age 78.6
Josiah Ball owned one slave, whose name was Andrew Dewner, sometimes written Duno. This slave was presented to him by a friend in Boston when a baby only 4 weeks old. Andrew grew up a faithful and trustworthy servant, received his freedom at 21 years of age, and a nice horse for a present. That horse he exchanged for a slave-girl in Marlboro, whose name was Rose, and whom he made his wife. Josiah Ball gave Andrew a little homestead, comprising 12 acres of land and a small dwelling-house.7 "Josiah and his brother Peter took deed from William Brewer of Boston of considerable land east of Long Pond, in that part of Milford now set off to Mendon. Peter sold his portion of holdings and located in Southboro, while Josiah located and resided in Mendon."2

Comment by DGB: yDNA testing of a direct descendant shows that Daniel in turn was a descendant of John Ball and Elizabeth Pierce of Watertown and Lancaster MA. Based on current data it is most likely that this Daniel Ball was the son of Jonathan Ball and Sarah Whitney. Moreover, after the death of his father, it is probable that this Daniel Ball was raised by his much older cousin John Ball and wife Abigail Harrington and mentioned in that John's will as though he were a natural son. End of comment. He was raised by relatives after Jonathan Ball's death (see comment above) after 1727.1 Daniel Ball and his wife were admitted to full communion in the church. That same day his sons Moses, Aaron and Daniel were baptized. The North Precinct or Parish of Shrewsbury, Mass. was established 17 Dec. 1742. Daniel's father-in-law, Aaron Newton was admitted to the church 12 Jan. 1745.4
